Copied from the file already uploaded: • Calvin claimed that wisdom can be divided into how many parts? What are they? • How do knowledge of self and knowledge of God relate, according to Calvin? • According to Calvin, of what should our own corruption and depravity remind us? • How do our own ills prompt us to meditate upon the good things of God? • What did Calvin mean by the phrase, "we cannot aspire to God in earnest before we become displeased with ourselves?" • Do you think Calvin's approach to apologetics in this first section is a reasonable one? Should one always begin with Scripture, or is it feasible to begin with self-knowledge? Please answer (if you wish), one question per post. Or ask your own questions of the group; or ask and answer a question you hope to be thought-provoking. Two weeks on chapters one-four. The animal known as "moderate Calvinism" turns out to be, more often than not, nothing more than restated Arminianism, at least that has been my experience.<<< Thanks for your response. I couldn't agree more. I've read The Potter's Freedom and felt that James White did an excellent job as well. --------------------------------- Post your free ad now! Yahoo! There is a slim volume that was designed for group studies of the first three books of the Institutes. A part of the "Shepherd's Notes" series, it is entitled simply _Calvin's Institutes_. It is a sort of "Classics Illustrated" or "Cliff's Notes" study guide. Very broad in its examination of the Institutes. A second resource is by Ford Lewis Battles himself and titled _Analysis of the Institutes of the Christian Religion of John Calvin_. This second book contains a very detailed outline of the Institutes, along with some critical comments in the introduction (I'm using the term 'critical' in the historic sense, not the movie- goer sense). Here is the biblio info: Battles, Ford Lewis. _Analysis of the Institutes of the Christian Religion of John Calvin_. Phillipsburg: Presbyterian and Reformed Publishing Co. (Available discounted from http://www.trinitybookservice.org) DeVries, Mark. _John Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion_, series ed. Kirk Freeman. Nashville: Broadman & Holman Publishers. (Available online from CBD, http://www.christianbook.com/. Hope this is helpful to some or all.
