Discussion of George Gillespie's Wholesome Severity Reconciled with Christian Liberty

GWS-3 to GWS-6 Questions for Thought
Subject: GWS-3 to GWS-6 Questions for Thought

GWS-3:
What are the distinctions Suarez made and how would they
differ from Reformed distinctions?

GWS-4:
How might heresies be suppressed if not by burning the
heretic?

GWS-5:
On what basis does Calvin distinguish three sorts of error?
Does GG seem to approve or disapprove this distinction?

GWS-6:
The second Helvetic (ch 30) also teaches, "let him, therefore,
hold the Word of God in his hands, and look that nothing be taught
contrary thereunto. In like manner, let him govern the people,
committed to him of God, with good laws, made according to the Word
of God in his hands, and look that nothing be taught contrary
thereto."
What might it mean for the magistrate to make laws "according
to" the word of God?
How might the magistrate (Belgic Confession Art. 36) determine
what is false worship (faux service de Dieu)? GG translates
"abolish and overthrow" for "oter et ruiner." Others translate the
same phrase as "remove and prevent" (actually, the Schaff translation
is probably from the Latin rather than the French). Which is more
in keeping with the Magistrate's position and why?
The same article of the Belgic seems to limit magistrates'
power by claiming, "they must therefore countenance the preaching of
the word of the gospel everywhere, that God may be honored and
worshiped by everyone as he commands in his word." How does this limit
the role of the magistrate?
